Country music icon Willie Nelson<\/b> calls Spreckelsville<\/b> one of his homes away home, while Kris Kristofferson<\/b> (RIP) savored Maui\u2019s remote eastern coast. Clint Eastwood, Steven Tyler, Owen Wilson,<\/b> and the master of talk show artistry Oprah Winfrey<\/b> are familiar faces around the Valley Isle<\/b>. And who can forget that Maui\u2019s lush North Shore<\/b> is the long-time home of Poet Laureate and environmental advocate W.S. Merwin<\/b>? <\/span>Given the inspiration Maui arouses, it\u2019s no surprise that it\u2019s also home to one of the most exciting film festivals in the country, The Maui Film Festival. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Created by media arts maven Barry Rivers,<\/b> the Maui Film Festival <\/b>launched its first celebration in 2000; since then, the annual event has garnered global acclaim for its topnotch celebrity sightings, the island\u2019s sultry setting\u2014and, of course, the outstanding films it showcases. <\/span><\/p>\n

Much of its appeal is due to the fact that Rivers intentionally focuses on booking films that, like Hawaii itself, extend heartening, even healing messages and insights. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s enough darkness surrounding us all,\u201d the New York native and former director-producer told Variety<\/i>. \u201cThere is acrimony in the culture and among nations, and people are always being confronted with problems but no easy solutions. So we want to show the world as it might be.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a lineup of Candyland films,\u201d Variety<\/i> is quick to point out. Some \u201ctackle subjects that are challenging and gritty, but the endings are uplifting and transformative. Rivers says they are films \u2018at the intersection of smart and heart\u2019\u201d\u2014unsurprising for a veteran Mauian who, with his wife, Stella (who serves as the festival\u2019s co-director) raised three children in a rustic Hawaiian commune.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

The integrity of this vision has spurred a number of luminaires to cross the Pacific every June to attend the assortment of events Rivers and his team present. Past honorees have included Breaking Bad\u2019s <\/i>Bryan Cranston,<\/b> three-time Academy Award nominee Viola Davis<\/b>, Claire Danes, Olivia Wilde, Kristen Bell, Dennis Quaid, Felicity Huffman,<\/b> Beetlejuice<\/i> director Tim Burton<\/b>, and Maui\u2019s own Nelson\u2014who, in 2009, took home Maui Film Festival\u2019s Maverick Award for his artistic achievements and political expression. <\/span><\/p>\n

And it isn\u2019t just the Hollywood A-listers<\/b> that are given star treatment (privacy, scant paparazzi, and the island\u2019s phenomenal weather are chief among the festival\u2019s draws): Guests are granted 40-plus films<\/b> to choose from over the five-day event<\/b>, as well as the chance to watch Q & As with fest\u2019s honored leads. Learning to Drive<\/i>\u2014starring Patricia Clarkson<\/b> and Ben Kingsley<\/b>\u2014Alan Rickman\u2019s A Little Chaos<\/i>, and the highly praised surfing documentary Highwater<\/i> are just a few of the films that were exhibited at the fest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Typically held on the gorgeous grounds of the Grand Wailea<\/b>, the Maui Film Festival\u2019s Taste of Summer<\/b> kicks off the fun fete with an exceptional culinary arts celebration.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

In 2016, patrons were offered a bevy of stellar eats, including a Hawaiian poke station<\/b> with ahi and Hamachi; Hamakua mushroom grilled flatbread; roasted local beets with fig balsamic; fresh oysters, and ultra-luxe desserts<\/b> (such as dark chocolate Namelaka with cherry pearls and creamed coconut with fresh-picked mango). <\/span><\/p>\n

Hobnobbing with visiting celebs is just as delicious, while live music,<\/b> exquisite cocktails<\/b>, and sunset views<\/b> vie for attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Macy weren\u2019t enough: One of Maui Film Festival\u2019s most anticipated events is their annual Taste of Chocolate<\/b>, a luscious affair that highlights Wailea\u2019s pastry chefs\u2019 greatest inventions<\/b>\u2014primarily in the form of chocolate. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hosted on the grounds of the Four Seasons<\/b>, past showstoppers have included milk chocolate panna cotta with tropical fruit, coconut truffles, chocolate cheesecake ganache with Grand Marnier syrup, molten chocolate with salted caramel\u2014even cocoa and Kula coffee-braised short ribs. <\/span><\/p>\n

With the star-lit sky\u2014and<\/i> star appearances\u2014this is one of the most decadent evenings of an already extravagant celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Widely considered Maui Film Festival\u2019s premier event\u2014if not one of the island\u2019s hottest parties of the year\u2014Taste of Wailea<\/b> brings together the island\u2019s preeminent chefs to create one culinary masterpiece after another. <\/span><\/p>\n

The setting alone is well-worth the spendy ticket: On Wailea\u2019s Gold and Emerald Golf Courses, <\/b>which provides spectacular vistas of Haleakala<\/b> above and the Pacific <\/b>in the super-close distance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Past chefs have included Peter Merriman<\/b> of Merriman\u2019s Kapalua<\/b> and Monkeypod Kitchen<\/b>, Cameron Leward <\/b>of Spago,<\/b> Bev Gannon <\/b>of Gannon\u2019s Restaurant<\/b> and Hali\u2019imaile General Store<\/b>, and Tylun Pang <\/b>of the Kea Lani\u2019s Ko<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dubbed \u201cTOW\u201d and the \u201cBest of the Best of Wailea\u2019s Chefs,\u201d guests can expect dishes that range from mascarpone and lobster risotto with grilled lemon, to ahi crudo with green papaya and coconut. Past desserts have been just as special\u2014like brown butter banana cake and Budino di Cioccolate all Mandorle<\/i> with tahini butter, raspberry sauce, and Black Sea salt. <\/span><\/p>\n

Held on Wailea Beach<\/b> (an enclave of golden sand christened America\u2019s #1 Beach<\/b> by \u201cDr. Beach\u201d), this complimentary, open-to-all event features movies made exclusively by Hawaii-based filmmakers. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Many tend to be culturally important; others are just plain fun. Past gems have included Aina: That Which Feeds <\/i>Us and Sam Choy\u2019s Poke to Da Max<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Between the crashing waves and rocking resorts (the beach is framed by the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons), this keiki<\/i>-friendly bash always brims with aloha.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rivers takes full advantage of Maui\u2019s perennially stunning setting by creating a Celestial Cinema<\/b> on Wailea\u2019s best golf course, where a 50-foot screen, powered and lit by solar energy, allows guests to get absorbed in films in the lovely outdoor air. (Most guests\u2014including Clint Eastwood\u2014bring along low-back chairs; others carry pillows, towels, and blankets.) Catered by Gannon\u2019s Restaurant, the venue seats up to 2,500 visitors, and is, as the Hollywood Reporter<\/i> remarks, \u201cthe embodiment of relaxed elegance<\/b>, providing ample opportunity to enjoy stargazing of both the Hollywood and heavenly varieties.\u201d Films at the Celestial Cinema are preceded by a hula show<\/b> and a tour of the cosmos <\/b>by the festival\u2019s astronomer, Harriet Witt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glitzy Wailea isn\u2019t the only venue that features 40 of the 1,000-plus film submissions Rivers receives annually: On the other side of the island (the central side, to be precise) Castle Theater<\/b> at the Maui Arts and Cultural <\/b>Center\u2014a multi-tiered performance space complete with an orchestra shell (and pit), superb lighting, and a sprung-wood dance floor\u2014displays several of the festival\u2019s films on its 41\u2019 x 27\u2019 screen (the largest of any 35mm theater in Hawaii). Film showings at this glam spot include live music, dinner, and dessert at the Candlelight Caf\u00e9. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

All of the festival\u2019s films, which are produced by filmmakers from around the globe (including Australia, France, and Mexico<\/a>), have proven to be dramatic and varied, from celebrity-packed features with multi-million-dollar budgets to small, quiet films that underscore Maui Film Festival\u2019s belief in the power of \u201coriginal cinema:\u201d movies that \u201callow us to ignite our passion, focus our vision, honor our mission, reveal our character, and soothe our collective souls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017, the much-loved festival is launching \u201cSpecial Showcases,\u201d <\/b>wherein filmmakers will be honored in four categories: \u201cMobile Movies\u201d (projects shot entirely with an iPhone or Android mobile device); \u201cHero Shots\u201d (filmed on GoPro cameras); \u201cRhythm & Hues\u201d (short or feature-length music videos), \u201cBrands Take Stands!\u201d (content co-created between filmmakers and brands to \u201ceducate, celebrate, and generate mandates for changing what is to what might be\u201d), and \u201cIt Lives Online!\u201d\u2014series and episodes intentionally created to live on the web.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure, the Maui Film Festival may not have the cachet of Sundance or Cannes, but with
\n\u201cshoes optional\u201d awards ceremonies, Maui Kamikaze Popcorn, and whale sightings in the distance, it is 100% Hawaii<\/b>\u2014which is, as the Director of Programming at Sundance Trevor Groth writes, \u201cone of the best places in the world to launch a movie.\u201d<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n
