Big Maui.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3075\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nei-map.jpg\" alt=\"Maui Nei Map\" width=\"907\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nei-map.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nei-map-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nei-map-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nei-map-600x403.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And big indeed: according to geologist Harold Stearns\u2014and, subsequently, scientists at the Smithsonian Institute and the University of California at Davis\u2014<b>Maui Nui spanned 5,640 square miles<\/b>, rendering the land mass <b>50% larger than Hawaii\u2019s formidable and aptly named <a href=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/category\/hawaii\/big-island\/\">Big Island<\/a>.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3083\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nui-illustration.jpg\" alt=\"maui nui illustration\" width=\"907\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nui-illustration.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nui-illustration-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-nui-illustration-768x604.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Part of its vastness was due to <b>Penguin Bank<\/b>\u2014a wide shoal, west of Molokai, that originated as a shield volcano roughly 2.2 million years ago. Once connected to the neighboring island of <b>Oahu<\/b>, the now coral-capped <b>Penguin Bank encompassed an area eight times larger than the present size of Kahoolawe.<\/b> Additionally, what we know today as the <b>serrated coastline of Hana<\/b> once stretched an additional 47 miles east, making Maui Nui a tremendous sight to behold (and now imagine).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3082\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kahoolawe.jpg\" alt=\"kahoolawe\" width=\"907\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kahoolawe.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kahoolawe-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kahoolawe-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Together, these regions comprised what\u2019s known as one of the <b>seven primary Cenozoic Era volcanoes<\/b> and part of the <b>prehistoric Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain<\/b>, a largely-submerged mountain range that extends through the Pacific Ocean in a series of atolls, shallows, banks, and reefs to the <b>Kure Atoll<\/b> in the northwest, which is perhaps best known as housing <b>hundreds of thousands of seabirds.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3081\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kure-atoll.jpg\" alt=\"kure atoll\" width=\"907\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kure-atoll.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kure-atoll-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kure-atoll-768x483.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over time, however, the flatter regions between the volcanoes that created the four distinct islands we now recognize as individual landmasses became submerged in a process known as <b>subsidence<\/b>: the weight of the <b>shield volcanoes,<\/b> which causes the underlying oceanic crusts to stoop under pressure, <b>coupled with<\/b> <b>erosion and rising sea levels<\/b>, flooded the saddles between the islands, leaving much of its original volcanic activity underwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The connection between <b>Penguin Bank<\/b> and <b>West Molokai<\/b> broke, while what\u2019s called a \u201cpermanent embayment\u201d detached East Molokai from the Western Maui we know today as <b>Lahaina, Kaanapali, Napili, and Kahana<\/b>. This was followed by a rush of water that inundated the connection between <b>East Molokai<\/b> and <b>Lanai,<\/b> turning the bridge between the two obsolete. The latest glacial melting\u2014<b>around 18,000 years ago<\/b>\u2014left only the islands we know today as Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, and Maui exposed; some scientists speculate that a similar process will divide the <b>Big Island<\/b>, separating zones according to the mountains that preside over them: <b>Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, and Kohala.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3076\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/mauna-kea.jpg\" alt=\"Mauna Kea\" width=\"907\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/mauna-kea.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/mauna-kea-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/mauna-kea-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While Maui\u2019s <b>Mount Haleakala\u2019s<\/b> imposing height and sheer immensity suggests an incredible age, it\u2019s <b>the youngest volcano to contribute to Maui Nui,<\/b> with its most eruption dating back as early as 1790. The cavernous caldera that serves as the crowning jewel of <b>Haleakala National Park<\/b> today is considered to be the enduring effect of <b>two massive landslides<\/b> to the north and south of the peak. Consider this and all of Maui County\u2019s history to be symptomatic of <b>Hawaiian shield volcanoes<\/b> in general: each goes through a series of eruptive stages that renders their latter phases susceptible to the very landslides and erosion that make them vulnerable to disappearing underwater, and yet also gives them the <b>vertiginous cliffs, gorgeous reefs, and stunning coastlines<\/b> we honor and adore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3074\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/haleakala-crater.jpg\" alt=\"Haleakala Crater\" width=\"907\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/haleakala-crater.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/haleakala-crater-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/haleakala-crater-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Modern-day Kaho\u02bbolawe<\/b> is evidence of the Hawaiian shield volcano\u2019s phenomena. Red-hued and squatter than most islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, Kaho\u02bbolawe\u2019s eastern half fell during a cataclysmic landslide. And <b>Molokai&#8212;<\/b>otherwise known as the <b>Friendly Isle<\/b>\u2014lost a significant part of its land mass when its summit caldera was split by a <b>colossal landslide<\/b> that sent half-mile-sized blocks up to 100 miles north of the island and ultimately created what we know today as the <b>steepest sea cliffs on the planet.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3077\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/molokai-sea-cliffs.jpg\" alt=\"Molokai Sea Cliff\" width=\"907\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/molokai-sea-cliffs.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/molokai-sea-cliffs-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/molokai-sea-cliffs-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But, while seemingly catastrophic, Maui Nui\u2019s separation could easily be considered a boon for humans, plants, and animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Each island now holds its own special brand of charm. Commonly called <b>Maui No Ka Oi,<\/b> the <b>Valley Isle<\/b> is home to <b>one of the most spectacular rainforests on Earth<\/b>, while its geological evolution has left <b>half of the entire island within a five-mile radius of the coastline<\/b>. <b>Lanai <\/b>may be considered Ellison\u2019s Island now, but it once served as the <b>largest pineapple plantation in the world<\/b>. <b>Molokai<\/b>\u2014lush, beautiful, and chill\u2014became a <b>leprosy colony<\/b> during <b>Kamehameha the Great\u2019s<\/b> reign, housing over 8,000 lepers during the epidemic\u2019s peak. <b>Kahoolawe<\/b>\u2014uninhabited and the <b>smallest island in the Hawaiian chain<\/b>\u2014served as a <b>training ground <\/b>and <b>bombing site<\/b> during World War II and continued to be used as for live fire-training exercises until 199o; today, it\u2019s used exclusively for <b>native Hawaiian cultural and spiritual practices.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3079\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/lanai-island.jpg\" alt=\"lanai island\" width=\"907\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/lanai-island.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/lanai-island-300x98.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/lanai-island-768x250.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Additionally, the <b>flora and fauna<\/b> that existed on the giant land mass known as Maui Nui have survived rising sea levels, indeed providing <b>rich, ample environments<\/b> for several species to evolve. Such a range has contributed to <b>Hawaii\u2019s remarkable biodiversity<\/b>. And should you need further evidence that Maui County was once a huge land mass, consider this: <b>flightless ibises<\/b> were found on both Molokai and Lanai, while a single type of <b>flightless duck<\/b> has been discovered on Maui, Molokai, and <a href=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/oahu-photo-gallery\/\">Oahu<\/a> (perhaps explaining the name of its original bridge, Penguin Bank).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3080\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-flora-fauna.jpg\" alt=\"Maui flora fauna\" width=\"908\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-flora-fauna.jpg 908w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-flora-fauna-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-flora-fauna-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/maui-flora-fauna-768x386.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But the biggest blessing of Maui Nui\u2019s division might just be the fact that it created a sanctuary for the<b> North Pacific Humpback whale.<\/b> Every year, between November and May, these enormous beauties (as in, up to 50 tons) migrate from Alaska to Maui\u2019s warm waters to \u201cwinter\u201d Hawaiian style, in large part because the waters between the four islands drop only 300 feet deep\u2014rendering the region a <b>safe, protected bay that\u2019s free of predators and perfect for nursing newborns.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3078\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/humpback-whales.jpg\" alt=\"humpback whales\" width=\"907\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/humpback-whales.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/humpback-whales-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/humpback-whales-768x329.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Think Maui is small by today\u2019s standards? Think again. Due to its geological history and vulnerability to further erosion and sea level changes, scientists estimate that Haleakala and West Maui (built by the now-extinct <b>Mount Kahalawai<\/b>) will become distinct islands in roughly 15,000 years.
