{"id":11994,"date":"2019-09-23T13:34:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-23T23:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/?p=11994"},"modified":"2024-11-11T18:59:57","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T04:59:57","slug":"cenotes-of-tulum-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/cenotes-of-tulum-mexico\/","title":{"rendered":"Cenotes of Tulum Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Our recent trip to Cancun, Maya Riviera &amp; Tulum<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier this year, we took our families to Mexico to explore, listen to some live music, and enjoy some delicious Mexican food (something we don&#8217;t have a lot of on Maui.)\u00a0 Our trip did not disappoint!\u00a0 An unexpected surprise came as we learned of the many cenotes (freshwater underground pools) dotting the Yucatan Peninsula.\u00a0 Below are some highlights from our Mexico trip!<\/p>\n<div class=\"container-lazyload preview-lazyload container-youtube js-lazyload--not-loaded\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/k6OTfP18bMc\" class=\"lazy-load-youtube preview-lazyload preview-youtube\" data-video-title=\"Cenotes of Tulum Mexico | Cancun Snorkeling\" title=\"Play video &quot;Cenotes of Tulum Mexico | Cancun Snorkeling&quot;\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/k6OTfP18bMc<\/a><noscript>Video can&#8217;t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/k6OTfP18bMc\" title=\"Cenotes of Tulum Mexico | Cancun Snorkeling\" target=\"_blank\">Cenotes of Tulum Mexico | Cancun Snorkeling (https:\/\/youtu.be\/k6OTfP18bMc)<\/a><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We visited 6-7 different cenotes around Tulum and Maya Riviera (I wish I&#8217;d have written down all their names, but we just cruised from one to the next without much direction.)\u00a0 It was AMAZING!\u00a0 Most require a small fee per person to enter, then you climb down stairs onto man-made decks.\u00a0 You can then snorkel or scuba dive among stalactites (coming from the ceiling), stalagmites (coming from the floor), flying bats, swimming fish and turtles.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the cenotes we visited were labrynths with multiple pools (watch the video and you&#8217;ll see scuba divers going from one cavern to the next).\u00a0 Other cenotes were jungle pools with diving towers and even massive lakes of bright turquoise water and great swimming.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11999\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya.jpg\" alt=\"Riviera Maya\" width=\"1247\" height=\"676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya.jpg 1247w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya-1080x585.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya-1200x651.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya-1024x555.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/riviera-maya-908x492.jpg 908w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1247px) 100vw, 1247px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">We had a blast in Cancun, Maya Riviera and in Tulum, but the real stand out from the trip was visiting all the amazing cenotes.<\/h4>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11712\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/line.gif\" alt=\"line\" width=\"1200\" height=\"75\" \/>Cenote Formation<\/h2>\n<p>While the majority of the Yucatan Peninsula &#8211; excluding Puuc Hills &#8211; is flat, the cenotes likely would not have formed without the aid of the asteroid that created a massive crater some 65,000 years ago in what is now known as the town of Chicxulub, located north of Merida. Over centuries, a natural pool is created from rain water as it filters through layers of perforated rock and collects underground. It\u2019s recommended to hire a driver or take a camiones, an inexpensive local minivan.
