The first, <b>Kamaole I<\/b>, boasts a third of a mile of <b>pristine white sand <\/b>and<b> solid snorkeling <\/b>near its lava-rocked points. <b>Kamaole II<\/b>, meanwhile, rests in the hub of the sand-blown city and serves as a popular spot for <b>watching the sunset<\/b> from its roadside wall. The southernmost park, <b>Kamaole III<\/b>, is a favorite among<i> kama\u02bbaina <\/i>and their <i>keiki,<\/i> thanks to a great expanse of grass otherwise known as <b>Peace Park<\/b>. (Weekends here are often packed with jumping castles and waterslides.) But what all three have in common is <b>glassy water, superb snorkeling, loads of sunshine, perfect SUP conditions<\/b>\u2014and <b>the buzzy, beachy vibe of tropical vacations.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Know before you go: <\/b>The Kams are best enjoyed in the early morning hours and the late afternoons\u2014trade winds often arrive between 11 am and noon. The surf here tends towards the calmer side\u2014making each beach <b>great for swimming with children<\/b>\u2014and all parks are equipped with bathrooms, showers, and street-side and\/or public parking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Nearby eats: <\/b>Given that the Kams make up the southern tail of Kihei\u2014which is filled with condos and caf\u00e9s\u2014you\u2019re bound to find grinds for everyone on your list. A small park at the entrance to the beach features grills, picnic tables, and bathrooms, but you\u2019ll want to be right next to the ocean\u2014which stretches out in beautiful blues to the outlying islands of <b>Kaho\u02bbolawe,<\/b> <b>Molokini,<\/b> and <b>Lanai.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Know before you go: <\/b>The southern end may be quieter but there is little shade on this side; for an ideal day, pack an umbrella. When the south swell hits hard, Polo tends to get fierce near its southern point (the shore break on the whole beach can be formidable, too) so refrain from swimming\u2014or use extreme caution\u2014when there are high surf warnings, as there are no lifeguards on duty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Nearby eats: <\/b>Wailea is resort country, but that doesn\u2019t mean your only choice for treats is at the ultra-opulent <b>Kea Lani<\/b> (which, for those looking to splurge, has a handful of above-par restaurants, including the inimitable <b>Ko<\/b>): Straight up Kaukahi, you\u2019ll find <b>Mulligans on the Blue<\/b>, where the beer is cold, the views are epic, and the fish and chips are downright stellar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11712\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/line.gif\" alt=\"line\" width=\"1200\" height=\"75\" \/><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Keawakapu<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Extending nearly a mile from Kihei\u2019s southernmost tip to <b>Wailea\u2019s Mokapu Beach<\/b>, <b>Keawakapu<\/b> may have been dubbed a \u201cforbidden cove\u201d by ancient Hawaiians but it\u2019s now <b>one of the most treasured beaches on the island<\/b>. And for good cause: Its northern end presents a sweep of grass shaded by lanky palms; its water is perfect for <b>snorkeling, swimming, boogie and body boarding,<\/b> and the Balinese houses that line its shores are nothing but lovely (if not envy-inducing). Those looking to pal around with their gang will find great energy on the northern end in front of the <b>Mana Kai,<\/b> while beachgoers in search of serenity will find plenty of peace in the center of the beach\u2019s cushiony sand. (Your best bet is to park across the street from the beach in front of Wailea Kai.) A favorite among locals, the beach tends to get packed at sunset and on the weekends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Nearby eats: <\/b>The Mana Kai\u2014a family-friendly resort condominium\u2014features <b>Zack\u2019s Deli &amp; General Store<\/b>, which offers sandwiches, plate lunches, beer, and snacks. Prices are at a premium here, but it\u2019s nothing if not convenient. Within the resort, you\u2019ll also find <b>5 Palms<\/b> (which has a great<i> pau hana <\/i>with half-priced sushi) while a few steps down the beach you\u2019ll come across <b>Sarento\u2019s<\/b>, where you can dine on pasta and fish <i>al fresco.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11712\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/line.gif\" alt=\"line\" width=\"1200\" height=\"75\" \/><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Big Beach\/Oneloa<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Wailea may be luxe and polished (read: manicured landscaping, grand resorts, immaculate neighborhoods), but its southern cousin <b>Makena<\/b> was, for many years, <b>one of the wildest and most rugged areas on the island<\/b>\u2014a place of cacti and kiawe forests, laidback homesteads, horse stables, and, inarguably, some of <b>Maui\u2019s finest beaches.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11574 size-full\" title=\"Top Maui Beaches Oneloa\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/big-beach-maui.jpg\" alt=\"Top Maui Beaches Oneloa\" width=\"907\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/big-beach-maui.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/big-beach-maui-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/big-beach-maui-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/big-beach-maui-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mauiinformationguide.com\/makena.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Makena<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s crowning jewel, <b>Makena State Park<\/b>, has remained untouched, and its mile and a half of copious white sand earned it its well-fitting moniker. And big it is\u2014so large in fact that three separate parking areas demarcate its entrances. First Entrance, located on the northernmost end, is a prime point of access to <b>Little Beach<\/b> (see #5) and is framed by the red-hued cinder cone of Pu\u02bbu O\u02bbLai. Second Entrance is largely noted for the graffiti-covered WWII bunker that sits between its entrance and <b>Thirds<\/b>, while the latter is a <b>skimboarder&#8217;s paradise.<\/b> Widely known for its <b>fearsome shore break<\/b> (another one of Makena\u2019s nicknames is <b>\u201cBreak Neck Beach\u201d),<\/b> and boasting incredible views of <b>Kaho\u02bb<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>olawe<\/b> and <b>Haleakala<\/b>, Big Beach is unlike any other place on the island\u2014or, rather, in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Know before you go: <\/b>Due in part to a spate of injuries at Big Beach (from spinal injuries to deaths), there <i>are<\/i> lifeguards on duty. But beware: the waves here are unpredictable and unforgiving\u2014so much so it\u2019s rated <b>one of the most dangerous beaches in Hawaii.<\/b> (When in doubt, absolutely do not go out.) Mid-mornings to afternoons tend to see the arrival of the notorious <b>\u201cMakena Cloud,\u201d<\/b> so your best bet for the uninterrupted sun is in the mornings. Keep an eye on where you step if you\u2019re heading to Thirds: the path to the sand is riddled with kiawe thorns. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Nearby eats: <\/b>While Makena has been systematically developed over the last three decades, it is, aside from the former Maui Prince Hotel (presently under construction), comprised of private residences. That said, <b>Bubba\u2019s Gourmet Dog Shack<\/b> is usually parked on the <i>makai<\/i> side of the road before the \u201cMakena Bumps;\u201d here, you\u2019ll find fast, economical, and excellent eats\u2014and super-refreshing <b>shave ice.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11712\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/line.gif\" alt=\"line\" width=\"1200\" height=\"75\" \/><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Little Beach<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Just over the northern edge of<b> Pu\u02bbu O\u02bblai<\/b>\u2014a volcanic dome created by Haleakala\u2019s last eruption\u2014lies <b>Little Beach<\/b>, a small, golden-sanded cove noted for its abundance of nudity (though it is illegal). Snorkeling here is first-rate\u2014we mean of the <i>marine<\/i> life, mind you\u2014and while the waves can still be daunting, they\u2019re not nearly as challenging as Oneloa\u2019s. <b>Sunbathing<\/b> and <b>body boarding<\/b> are mad-popular here, but it WAS Little Beach\u2019s Sunday night soirees that were its biggest allure: This weekly event brought locals and visitors to its shore to take part in Makena\u2019s famed drum circle.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the gate is now locked at 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11580 size-full\" title=\"Top Maui Beaches Little Beach\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/little-beach-maui.jpg\" alt=\"Top Maui Beaches Little Beach\" width=\"907\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/little-beach-maui.jpg 907w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/little-beach-maui-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/little-beach-maui-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/little-beach-maui-600x337.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Know before you go: <\/b>Given its, well, <i>little<\/i> size, Little Beach tends to get crowded, particularly on Sundays. An uphill trail through some crumbly lava sections is required, rendering it inaccessible to some. Many choose to go nude but you should know that it is illegal, and while some elect to bring their kids, our opinion is that it\u2019s only appropriate for adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Nearby eats: <\/b>Aside from the above, <b>fish taco trucks<\/b> and <b>fruit stands<\/b> are often erected alongside Makena Road. Your best bet? Pack a cooler with eats and drinks from <b>Kihei\u2019s Foodland<\/b> or <b>Wailea\u2019s Island Gourmet Market.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11712\" src=\"https:\/\/activityauthority.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/line.gif\" alt=\"line\" width=\"1200\" height=\"75\" \/><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Makena Cove\/Pa\u02bbako Beach<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Call it <b>Secret Cove<\/b>, call it <b>the Wedding Factory<\/b>, call it its given name, <b>Pa\u02bbako<\/b>\u2014what matters is that this not-so-hidden gem in what was once known as the Honua\u02bbula <i>ahupua\u02bba<\/i> is, like many of South Maui\u2019s beaches, absolutely stunning. Concealed between oceanfront homes and a rock wall, this tiny inlet is a striking study in contrasts: <b>azure water,<\/b> <b>white sand, dark lava outcroppings,<\/b> and <b>gem-green flora<\/b>.
