Flip through a travel mag, gab with a Maui resident, or ogle images of Hawaii on Instagram<\/a>\u2014chances are your vision will be arrested by the Valley Isle\u2019s Seven Sacred Pools, a wonder of nature on Maui\u2019s east coast that features a gorgeous set of tiered waterfalls.<\/h3>\n

But as stunning and powerful as the inaccurately-nicknamed Seven Sacred Pools<\/strong> (\u02bbOhe\u02bbo Gulch<\/strong>) might be, the Kipahulu hot spot doesn\u2019t have the monopoly on Maui\u2019s hallowed places<\/strong>. Indeed, beyond the postcard perfection of the island\u2019s beaches, Maui is home to a number of exquisite sites that have long been deeply revered, many of which can be seen on Road to Hana tour<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re hoping to connect with Maui<\/a> in a meaningful way or are simply searching for attractions, here are seven of Maui\u2019s most sacred spots\u2014and the history behind them:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

\"line\"<\/h2>\n

1 – \u02bbIao Valley<\/h2>\n

Iao Valley has a tendency to cast a spell on its visitors.<\/strong> Located in the central basin of the island, the valley dazzles with its heady greens and tropical flowers, while its needle\u2014a volcanic erosion covered in lush vegetation\u2014hovers 1200 feet above sea level.<\/strong> The views here are equally dramatic, spooling out towards the rugged coastline, out to the northern coast of the island, and up to the hypnotic West Maui Mountains<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Iao<\/p>\n

But it isn\u2019t just \u2018Iao\u2019s beauty that is so captivating: Mana can be felt here in spades\u2014and it isn\u2019t only in one\u2019s head. In 1790, it turned into a theater of war<\/strong> in what was known as the \u201cBattle of the Clawed Cliffs\u201d<\/strong> (or the Battle of Kepaniwai<\/strong>), a three-day conflict, involving over 1200 soldiers and instigated by King Kamehameha<\/strong>, that resulted in the unification of the islands<\/strong>. (So vicious was this battle, it\u2019s said that the \u2018Iao\u2019s \u201criver ran red with the blood of the dead,\u201d inspiring the valley\u2019s nickname as the \u201cdamning of the waters\u201d). On a cheerier note, it is also here that ancient Hawaiians came together annually for makahiki festivals<\/strong> that paid homage to Lono, the God of Agriculture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today, the 4,000-acre, 10-mile-long park<\/strong> draws visitors to its banks with its cool stream, abundant vegetation, and splendid vistas. Climb its paved walkway for the most remarkable views\u2014and to imagine what the landscape must have looked like in a pre-united Hawaii.

2 – Moku\u02bbula<\/h2>\n

Lahaina<\/strong><\/a> may be a shopper and diner\u2019s paradise now\u2014the town\u2019s world-renowned Front Street<\/strong> houses a number of stellar boutiques, restaurants, and bars\u2014but its past was livelier for a far different reason.<\/p>\n

\"Moku'ula<\/p>\n

The village of Lele<\/strong>\u2014which served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii<\/strong> from 1837 to 1845\u2014also houses a small, sacred island underneath its abandoned baseball field<\/strong>. Considered a piko<\/em>\u2014or center of cosmic power\u2014and deemed one of the most important archeological discoveries in Hawaii<\/strong>, the buried island saw the birth of Hawaii\u2019s constitution<\/strong> and its land division treaty of the 1840s<\/strong>. Following the kingdom\u2019s capital\u2019s move from Maui to Oahu, the \u201cParthenon of the Pacific\u2019s\u201d surroundings filled with water, debris, and runoff from the nearby sugar plantation\u2019s irrigation, thus transforming the once-sanctified site into what\u2019s called Maui\u2019s \u201cforgotten island.\u201d<\/strong> An excavation performed in 1993 revealed the place\u2019s vitality in ancient Hawaii (including a wooden pier believed to have been used by ali\u02bbi<\/em> when crossing the pond) and restorations helmed by Friends of Moku\u02bbula<\/strong> are presently taking place. Visitors can experience the magic of Maui\u2019s former royal residence<\/strong> through a guided walking tour<\/strong> with Maui Nei<\/strong> or by volunteering<\/strong> in the name of the region\u2019s resurrection. There\u2019s a solid chance it\u2019ll be a well-spent endeavor: University of Hawaii\u2013Maui College Professor Janet Six likens it to world-heritage sites like Machu Picchu, Maui No Ka Oi<\/em> reports, and tells her students, \u201cIn the future, you\u2019ll be telling your grandkids you worked at Moku\u2018ula.\u201d<\/p>\n

3 – Pu\u02bbu Keka\u02bba<\/h2>\n

Located on the western end of one of Maui\u2019s most acclaimed beaches, Ka\u02bbanapali Beach<\/strong><\/a>, Pu\u2019u Keka\u2019a (commonly called \u201cBlack Rock<\/strong>\u201d) is famous for more reasons than the chance it presents to swan-dive into the Pacific<\/strong>: The lava promontory<\/strong> was known as ka-leine-a-ka-\u02bbuhane<\/em>\u2014or \u201cleap of the soul\u201d<\/strong>\u2014for its designation as a jumping-off point for dying souls who were ready to vault into the next world. (To note: It\u2019s believed that many battles fought on Maui were performed on the West Side because of its proximity to Pu\u2019u Keka\u2019a.)<\/p>\n

\"Black<\/p>\n

Black Rock wasn\u2019t just a place of departure, either: Maui\u2019s last independent ruler, Chief Kahekili<\/strong>, was an avid cliff-jumper (a sport termed \u201clele kawa\u201d) with a penchant for Pu\u02bbu Keka\u02bba\u2019s location; his insistence on leaping from its ledge only emphasized his regal status. Today, kama\u02bbaina and visitors alike scramble up the famous rock to bound into the blue water, where, at its base, they\u2019re granted incredible views of Maui\u2019s marine life. In other words? Bring snorkel gear should you visit this enticing venue.\u00a0 It’s fun to watch locals jump (from a safe distance.)<\/p>\n

\"Ka'anapali<\/p>\n

\"line\"<\/h2>\n

4 – Pi\u02bbilanihale Heiau<\/h2>\n

Technically known as Hale O Pi\u02bbilani Heiau<\/em>, Pi\u02bbilanihale Heiau calls for a clich\u00e9\u2014that is, this ancient Hawaiian landmark<\/strong> is a sight to savor. Located in Kahanu Garden<\/strong> on Maui\u2019s remote east coast, Hana<\/a><\/strong>, construction on this massive place of worship began in the 12th century and culminated in the largest temple in all of Polynesia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And large it is, roughly the size of two football fields, it took four phases to complete the holy project and was named after Chief Pi\u02bbilani<\/strong>\u2014a 16th-century ruler beloved for uniting the Valley Isle and encouraging peace and prosperity. Peering out upon the luxuriant fields of the National Tropical Botanical Garden<\/strong>\u2014where you can view the biggest collection of breadfruit trees in the world<\/strong>\u2014this venerated area is nothing if not a symbol of perseverance<\/strong>: its \u201cthousands and thousands of carefully stacked stones were carried by hand from as far as Hana Bay, seven miles away,\u201d writer Jill Engledow reports. Visit today and marvel at the thought that this now-quiet region was once one of the most vibrant hubbubs on the island.<\/strong><\/p>\n

5 –\u00a0 Haleakala<\/h2>\n

Haleakala<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s magnificence is hardly hidden: Looming 10,023 feet above sea level<\/strong>, the towering beauty is one of\u00a0the largest dormant volcanoes in the world<\/strong> and has a crater so vast it can house all of Manhattan Island.<\/p>\n

\"Haleakala<\/p>\n

Its scope aside, it was\u2014and remains\u2014a site of tremendous spiritual significance for Hawaiians<\/strong>. Having arisen from the Pacific more than a million years ago, its crater served as a place of worship, and ancient ritual sites<\/strong> have been discovered upon its rim; oral traditions also speak of sacred spots within the crater. (Additionally, legend says the demigod Maui<\/strong> lassoed the sun from the volcano\u2019s summit.) It was also here on Alehe-la<\/em> that Hawaiians came to hunt birds<\/strong> and camp out in caves and lava tunnels<\/strong>. Its significance as a sacrosanct spot persists: Presently, the park\u2019s cultural resources programs manager Elizabeth Gordon says, \u201cHawaiians today use some of the same sites in Haleakala as their ancestors used for ceremonial purposes\u2026It\u2019s a vibrant, living culture.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Experience its splendor by witnessing the sunrise from its slopes\u2014or hike down to the crater\u2019s floor, where the dearth of sound and unusual weather underscores just how extraordinary the \u201cHouse of the Sun\u201d truly is.<\/p>\n

6 – Makaluapuna Point<\/h2>\n

Visit Makaluapuna Point in Kapalua<\/strong> and you\u2019ll instantly know you\u2019ve arrived at a consecrated site: Signs out front tell visitors that they\u2019re entering \u201cwahi pana\u201d (or sacred spot) for kanaka maoli<\/em> (native Hawaiians).<\/p>\n

\"Kapalua<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no wonder why these grounds are so hallowed: the ancient burial ground<\/strong>, which edges against Dragon\u2019s Teeth, is believed to hold more than a thousand human remains, which are known as iwi<\/em> in Hawaiian. (What is Dragon\u2019s Teeth, you might ask? The result of one of the island\u2019s final lava flows, it\u2019s a feat of nature in which the hot magma colliding with the Pacific resulted in rock formations that resemble fangs.) Makaluapuna Point is located close to the Ritz-Carlton chapel<\/strong>, rendering the region holy in more ways than one.<\/strong><\/p>\n

7 – Olowalu<\/h2>\n

Drive to Maui\u2019s West Side<\/strong> and you\u2019re sure to be spellbound by the views on the Pali<\/strong>, where sunlight sparkles on the Pacific, the outlying islands lumber in the distance, and the red-tinged cliffs remind you of the island\u2019s fiery history.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re also sure to be awestruck by the sight of Olowalu<\/strong>\u2014a small community recognized as much for its unique reef<\/strong> and superb surf<\/strong> as its strong sense of mana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Olowalu<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a good reason behind its palpable spiritual power: Ancient Hawaiians considered Olowalu a place of refuge<\/strong>, a site where people who had committed crimes against others\u2014including ali\u02bbi<\/em>\u2014were deemed unassailable. And ghosts<\/a> really may roam these parts: Olowalu is also the site of a 1790 massacre<\/strong> between a British-American captain and native Hawaiians. Today, it\u2019s largely known as one of the best spots on Maui for snorkeling<\/a><\/strong>\u2014meaning, bring your gear and dive under, as its sacredness is also felt below the surface.<\/p>\n

When you emerge, head out to those aforementioned Seven Sacred Pools<\/strong> in Kipahulu<\/strong>. Its English name may be a misnomer\u2014technically, the Hana-side region is \u02bbOhe\u02bbo Gulch<\/strong>, which translates to \u201csomething special,\u201d and is comprised of more than seven cascades\u2014but its greatness and godliness are unmistakable. And while the pools are currently closed for swimming until further notice, the mere sight of them will remind you why Maui<\/a><\/strong> is considered one of the most sacred and healing spots on the planet.<\/strong><\/p>\n
